I am trying to configure a Sony SDT-7000 DAT tape on a Linux box. The
controler recognises the tape drive (its full id appears on the system
log), but the drive's LED flashing pattern always follow the sequence:
- some initial powerup blinking
- waiting for eject
- waiting for reset
and stop at that. From that point onwards I can not access the drive.
A tape remains inside the drive from the first time I put one in. I can
open /dev/st0, but read/write/ioctl gives me an ENXIO error. I tried to
issue a device reset (MTRESET) SCSI mtio MTIOCTOP ioctl with the same
results (ENXIO). I have tried the drive on two different adaptors
(Adaptec 2904 PCI and Adaptec 1540 ISA), both terminated at the end of
the SCSI chain and unterminated in the middle of the chain with exactly
the same results. I have also recompiled the aic7xxx driver used to
access the 2904 controler to delay the SCSI reset by 20 seconds; the
drive goes to its "waiting for reset" state before the driver issues the
reset, and stays there. On the same SCSI chain I am operating without a
problem a trusty old DC-6250 tape drive, so I do not think this is an
operating system / configuration problem. Any ideas?
