This did not work for me (gcc version 2.95.2 19991024 (release)). 
However, I replaced
       std::ifstream repstream((*repname).c_str());
with
       std::fstream repstream((*repname).c_str(), ios::in |
ios::binary);
which worked without a problem.  

In the ripper source, I could not find any documentation on how it is
to be executed.  After you compile try:

ripper --cat ../data/pprepos-test
