After spending a number of windsurfing seasons in the Greek Aegean
islands where 20-30kt winds are the norm, for the next several years it
looks like I'll be windsurfing in the Ionian sea where typical winds are
10-20kt. I weigh 67kg (148 lb) and I sailed an F2 Ride 277 board (103l,
7.5kg) with 4.6, 5.5 and 6.6 sails. I would rate my technique as low to
average: I can get on the straps and harness, plane, I seldom finish a
carve jibe, but therefore I've become a waterstarting pro :-)
Can you please give me some general directions for a board and sails to
get in order to enjoy windsurfing with the lighter winds of the Ionian
sea? Last year with my current equipment I only managed to sail five
days in a one month period, and it wasn't much fun. I was thinking on
getting a formula board, but after reading past rec.windsurfing articles
I realized that making the jump to 10-11m2 sails is not trivial. Also,
the launch site I'll be using is rocky and I fear a formula board will
not stand this abuse.
What I'm looking for are some general directions for board volume, sail
quiver, and maybe some models I should look into. As you have realized
I'm not into racing, I'm just looking for a board and sails that will be
fun to sail in low winds.
